Favorite Designs of 2010 – Kathleen R.

Have you ever come across someone  you instantly adore the moment you meet them?  Kathleen and her family happy to be one of those families you feel blessed in meeting.   We first met Kathleen about a year or so ago after she and her husband purchased a newly constructed home in Stafford.  One of the challenges for them was having to wait on painting the home after the one year mark of final construction.

As a side note –   I can understand the home builder wanting to wait until the home has settled and all cracks and nail pops can be fixed while the home is still within the one-year warranty, but if you simply cannot see yourself living in a “contractor white” house for a year, ask the builder to paint the walls a neutral color (usually a shade of beige) and most will do this at no charge.

Anyways, back to Kathleen and why we chose her sunroom as one of our favorite designs.    Most our clients prefer traditional decor and color, and what we did for Kathleen’s home was no different – with the exception of the sunroom.   Kathleen found a great old sofa upholstered in a kind of chartruese colored velvet and the moment she mentioned she wanted a zebra rug, I was thrilled!   It’s not often we get to mix truly ecletic styles into a design, so let the creative fun begin!

Here is Kathleen’s sunroom before and that great antique store find.

One of my first projects was to convert a trunk into a side table.  It’s actually easier than you may think  as long as you have the right materials.  I went to Lowes,  found corner leg braces and legs, and stained them to match the trunk.

Next was to create fun little floral arrangements for the “coffee” table.  The table is actually a bench we found at World Market and the size was perfect for the room and because it was long and narrow, the floral arrangement trio fit perfectly.

After the homework was done,  we went shopping for the zebra rug, additional side tables, lamps and accessories, and mixed them in with Kathleen’s great pieces.

After installing the window treatments and pulling all the pieces together, the room was complete!   It instantly became a favorite for all us girls and hope you like it too!  Let us know by leaving a comment!
